  • Detailed Info about bowl

This live edged bowl was turned from a European buckthorn log that was harvested near Minneapolis. Buckthorn in an invasive small tree that is hated by most since it takes over and is difficult to permanently remove. It is a beautiful wood to turn but difficult to find with a large diameter. This bowl came from a 10” diameter log. The colors in this bowl are vibrant and beautiful. There are a few dark areas and lines in the bowl that are common in crotches. These minor checks and bark inclusions are sealed and stable and give the bowl some added character. The complete live bark edge adds a contrasting border that nicely frames the bowl. The grain in buckthorn is very fine and the wood is extremely hard and strong when dry. The bowl actually has some curl figuring in the flat area of the bottom, but this chatoyhance does not show well in the photos. The bowl was turned from green wood and dried for several months under controlled conditions to prevent cracking. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but this bowl is best suited for artistic display. Turned buckthorn bowls are unusual and the sordid reputation of the tree will certainly start a conversation about its beauty.
