Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl is from a black walnut log that came from the Minneapolis, MN, area. The log was about 12” in diameter. The wood has vivid colors including black, brown, orange, and purple. Black walnut wood sometimes shows such colors. It is thought that colorful black walnut is a result of mineral staining that the tree takes up from the ground. These darker colors contrast nicely with the lighter golden colored sapwood and the dramatic dark bark edge. The bark is jagged and has an interesting wavy pattern of black and orange-red lines. The shape of the bowl is elegant, and its overall appearance will certainly attract attention. The grain of the wood shows nice growth lines with some glow. The shape of the bowl has the appearance of being oval. This is an optical illusion due to the height differences in the bowl. This shape is typical of a classic live edged bowl. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but the bark edge is somewhat fragile, so it is not recommended to use it for serving food. This bowl would also be spectacular as an artistic piece on a table or shelf. You can spruce up this bowl (if necessary) by buffing it with a soft cloth dampened with walnut oil, but simple dusting is all that is necessary. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
