Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl came from a large black walnut log. The log is from the Minneapolis area and was about 20” in diameter. It is unusual for me to turn non-bark edged bowls. This was one of two bowls made for a customer who decided to only buy one. Thus, this beautiful bowl is for sale. The bowl has a low profile to best display the food being served. The wood has distinct and strong grain lines and colors that range from brown to orange red. The lighter cream-colored sap wood, on opposite ends of the bowl, provides a striking appearance. The colors in this bowl are vivid and among the best I have seen in black walnut. Highly colored black walnut it thought to be due to mineral staining and occurs in trees that grow in mineral rich soil. This bowl is unusual and will stimulate conversation as its beauty is revealed during a meal. It will also provide a great center piece to a large table. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 400 grit. Bowls turned green (fresh wet wood) will warp. This adds a natural look that I really like. This bowl is slightly oval and can be seen in the top view photo. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, finished with a mixture of walnut oil and beeswax, and buffed with lamb’s wool. This finish is considered food safe. If needed, the finish of the bowl can be rejuvenated by applying a thin coat of walnut oil, wiping with a soft cloth, and letting it dry. If used for salad, any salad oil will help keep it in good shape. The bowl can be washed in soapy water, but it is important to dry it after washing. The natural oils in the wood will keep this bowl shining and serving for many years.
