Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl is from a large black walnut log provided by a friend. The wood came from the Minneapolis, MN, area. The log was about 16” in diameter. The wood has vivid colors including black, brown, and red overtones that contrast nicely with the lighter sapwood and the dramatic black bark edge. The bark is thick and has an interesting wavy pattern of black and orange-red lines. The shape of the bowl is elegant, and its overall appearance will certainly attract attention. The grain of the wood has wavy growth lines with some chatoyance (flame) in the right light. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so the bowl can be be used for serving and displaying food such as fruit and bread. The bark edge is somewhat fragile, so it is not recommended to serve wet food or salad. This bowl would also be spectacular as an artistic piece, such as the center piece of a large table. You can spruce up this bowl (if necessary) by buffing it with a soft cloth damped with walnut oil, but simple dusting is all that is really necessary. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
