  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a dry piece of black walnut crotch that I had been saving for several years. The wood originally came from the Minneapolis area and was left over from a project. Fortunately, the bark was still on the wood. This wood was extremely difficult to turn. My tools had to be sharpened every 5 min during the turning. This is unusual and most likely due to the presence of silica in the wood. Black walnut trees that grow in mineral rich soil are often very colorful with reds and purples, just like seen in this wood. The nutrients taken up by the tree probably contained some silica minerals. The wood is beautiful with amazing colors and patterns from the crotch area of intersection. The feather figuring in this area is beautiful and has some chatoyance. The wood is also very dark. This made photographing the bowl challenging. The bowl has a complete bark edge, so it nicely shows the beauty of black walnut wood. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from dry wood and sanded to 400 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of a mixture of pure tung oil and citrus solvent (squeezed orange peel, Real Milk Paint Co.), hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve or display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
