  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a cherry burl that I purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan, near the south shore of Lake Superior. The complete burl was cut in half to give two cross sectional pieces suitable for end-grain turning. Images of the complete burl and its cut halves are shown above. A view of the trimmed and partly turned piece used for this bowl is also shown. The top bark edge of the bowl will emerge from the right side of this piece. This live edge of the bowl follows the outer contours of the burl, giving a nice irregular shape. The pith or center of the log is in the center of the bowl since the burl wrapped completely around the log. There are several dark bark inclusions running down the sides of the bowl. These are sealed and stable and give a nice contrast to the lighter burl wood. There is some minor checking from the center or pith of the log. This has been sealed and is stable. The grain figuring is best described as mottled agate and bird’s eye, and there is good contrast to the lighter areas in the bowl. There is a patch work of red, light green, and cream-colored zones in this burl. This is beautiful and not typical of cherry burl. The bowl was turned end-grain using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve and display food. The shape of this bowl has two curves in the side wall, giving an extended smaller diameter base. This shape was selected to avoid decay, while keeping the bowl deep. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. Cherry wood always darkens as with age, giving it a rich patina.
