  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl is from a wild cherry burl that wrapped completely around a log. The burl was about 9.5” in diameter and was cut in the center perpendicular to the axis of the log to give two pieces. The complete burl used for this bowl is shown above. The burl was sold to me and came from private land in northern Wisconsin, not far from Superior. The burl was turned end-grain to give a natural bark edge that follows the outer contour of the burl. The center or pith of the log can be seen in the side-bottom of the bowl. There is beautiful swirling grain in the bottom of the bowl that quickly changes into the great burl figuring (bird’s eye of various size, clusters of bird’s eye, mottled agate figuring, and some radial curl rays just below the bark). There is also nice contrast to light areas in the wood. The colors range from red-brown to light cream. Cherry wood always becomes more red and darker with age. The shape of this bowl evolved from the shape of the burl and my desire to show off the natural bark edge. The bowl was turned end-grain using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although this bowl may be best suited for artistic display. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This is a very nice burl bowl and will stimulate great conversation. It has an elegant shape and great burl figuring!
