Detailed Info about bowl
This colorful and highly figured bark edged bowl was turned from a large elm burl that was obtained from a farmer in Sandstone, Minnesota. A photo above shows this amazing burl that measured about 18” in diameter and 4 ft long. The burl wrapped completely around the lower bole of the tree. The burl was cut into six cross sectional slabs for turning end-grain bowls, and the one used for this bowl is shown in a photo above. It is interesting that the wood picked up a cow manure odor that was quite strong during turning (but not present in the finished bowl). I have heard that trees can pick up local aromas and the tree grew on a dairy farm! The wood was solid and firm and nice to turn, and there was no cracking while drying. The wood shows a lot of bird’s eye figuring of various size, swirling dark growth rings around the pith of the tree, mottled agate figuring, and radial curly rays in the light cream colored cambium layer just below the striking dark bark edge. The overall effect of this is quite beautiful. I love turning end grain bowls like this since the bark edge nicely shows the outer contour of the burl and contrasts nicely with the cambium layer. The cross section of the tree also typically shows great figuring with radial rays. My goal was to turn a bowl that best showed the beauty of the wood. The shape of this bowl evolved during the turning as the figuring in the wood emerged. The bowl was turned using hand held tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe. This bowl would be a great centerpiece for a large table and could be used to hold fruit or bread, but it is probably best as an artistic piece. This is an unusual bowl and one of my favorites.
