  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a cherry burl that I purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan, near the south shore of Lake Superior. A view of the complete burl is shown above. I cut the burl in half as shown in the photo and selected the piece to the left and turned it end grain. A top cross sectional view of the freshly cut burl half is also shown above. The bark edge of the bowl follows the outer contours of the burl. The pith or center of the log is in the center of the bowl since the burl wrapped most of the way around the log. The pith always shows some minor cracking during drying. These cracks are filled and stable. The grain figuring is best described as mottled agate and bird’s eye. The red colors give a richness to these patterns and the size of the figuring area is dramatic. There are also some darker lines from spalting, and from a narrow bark inclusion. These are sealed and stable. The bowl was turned end-grain using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve and display food. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. Cherry wood always darkens as it ages giving it a rich patina. This bowl has a great look and feel and would be a nice centerpiece for a table.

All my bowls are can be returned for a full refund if you are unsatisfied for any reason within 60 days. You must only pay the return shipping.
