  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a burly sugar maple log that came from just south of Superior, WI. A photo above shows the 7 ft long log full of grapefruit sized burls. This bowl was turned end-grain (along the axis of the log) from the left end of the log. An image of the piece used for turning this bowl, mounted on the lathe, is shown above. The bowl has two main wings that spread outward. These show cross sections of five different burls that subtended the log. Note that the center or pith of the log is located in the bottom of the bowl, which also shows part of a sixth burl. The grain figuring in these burls is spectacular with many bird’s eyes and clusters of eyes, interwoven with lace figuring. The figuring in the wings continues down into the bowl but becomes more extreme with unusual twists as the grain merges with the circular grain of the log and of another burl. The overall effect is stunning. The outer bark along the top rim came off during turning leaving an amazing outer skin with thousands of tiny sharp prickly points. This type of outer texture in burls usually indicates the presence of eyes (or bird’s eye figuring), which is indeed the case here. The shape of the bowl evolved from the shape of the cross section of the burly log, and my desire to bring out the beauty of the wood and maintain a complete natural edge. The bowl was turned end-grain from dry wood using handheld tools on a lathe and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although this bowl is best suited for artistic display. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This is a very unusual bowl with beautiful grain figuring, a real collector’s piece.
