Detailed Info about bowl
This sugar maple burl came from the UP of Michigan, in the Lake Superior area. The jagged nature of the live bark edge of the bowl reflects the actual knobby bark of the burl. The trimmed burl attached to a lathe is shown in a photo. The shape of the bowl was turned to give the best presentation of the wood. I like to curve the top rim slightly inward in such small bowls since it provides a good view of the bark. It also gives the bowl a pleasing shape and a great feel. This bowl shows some chatoyance (flame or curl figuring) in the light areas. The dark areas result from spalting, bark inclusions, and decay. The decayed areas were stabilized with cyanoacrylate resin. The overall effect of the light-colored pearly wood, contrasting with the dark bark inclusions and the red-brown bark, is magnificent. There are also small holes in the bark inclusions and the jagged bark. These let light through, giving a nice effect. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. Wood that is turned green will always warp a little as it dries. This adds a natural quality to the bowl, but also requires the bottom to be re-turned so the bowl sits well. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although it is best used as an artistic piece. This bowl is quite rustic with its areas of stabilized decay, but also quite classy with its pearly light wood. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. It would look amazing on a dark colored table.
