Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a branched log cut from a large sugar maple tree that came down in a storm in Lutsen, Minnesota. The 16" diameter log is shown below with its smaller branch. My goal was to turn a live edged bowl that contained the crotch figuring. Unfortunately, this log had alot of decay, so this was not possible. I managed to cut a smaller piece for an end-grain turning with the hope of showing the crotch figuring in the bowl. This flat edged bowl nicely captures the dark pattern from the intersection of the two branches. The pattern appears as a face with its two eyes looking up out of the bowl. This bowl shows wavy circular grain lines with golden brown colors. The lines go around the bowl since it was turned end grain (or along the main axis of the log). This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sand along the gain lines before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.). This finish is considered food safe so the bowl can be used to serve and display food. It can be washed in warm soapy water and buffed with a soft cloth. It can be refreshed by buffing with some olive or any cooking oil. The bowl is sealed and stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This bowl has very nice colors and unusual dark patterns.
