  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl is from a large black gum or black tupelo burl that I received from a friend in Georgia, in exchange for an aspen burl from Minnesota. The black gum tree does not grow in Minnesota so it was unusual for me to turn this burl (I typically stay with local Lake Superior wood), but I knew it should have great grain figuring. The burl was nicely shaped but it had a large branch sticking out of one side (see image above). I just ignored the branch and turned the burl as usual, flaring out the top edge to keep a bark edge. The shape of the top of the bowl followed the exact contours of the burl near its flat cut face. This is shown in the images above. The grain figuring and colors in the bowl are really nice. The colors come in wavy zones and include tan, brown, orange and blue giving a tie-died type pattern. There is unusual tear drop bird’s eye figuring in streaming patterns, dark lines and zones from spalting, some small bark inclusions, and a knot from the branch. The knot has a round grain pattern and is colorful. I believe my friend buried this burl in moist Georgia earth for some time to encourage spalting. The bowl was turned from green wood using handheld tools on a lathe, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat dried, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although this bowl may be best suited for artistic display. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This is a very nice large burl bowl that will stimulate great conversation. It has an elegant shape, great burl figuring, colorful, and a jagged bark edge. It also comes from the great state of Georgia where hurricanes take down trees for wood turners to salvage.

All my bowls are can be returned for a full refund if you are unsatisfied for any reason within 60 days. You must only pay the return shipping.
