  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a cherry burl from the UP of Michigan. The large burl wrapped about 90% of the way around a log and was cut perpendicular to its axis as shown in an image abpve. This bowl was turned end-grain from the piece on the right in the image of the burl above. The live bark edge of the bowl follows the outer contours of the burl, and the pith of the log is near the center of the bowl (with its circular growth rings which total about 75 years). This bowl experienced some warping during drying which adds a nice small twist to the bowl. There were also some minor checks in the burl which extended slightly into the bowl. These were sealed and stabilized with cyanoacrylate resin. Such small checks are common in cherry burls and are completely stable after sealing. The bottom of the bowl was re-turned to provide an un-warped base. I like the natural warping in green turned wood. The grain figuring is best described as mottled agate and bird’s eye within red-orange regions. These regions are surrounded by a sea of light-colored wood. The overall effect is beautiful and unusual for cherry burl. The bowl was turned end-grain using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve and display food. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. Cherry darkens with age, giving a rich patina. This is an unusual piece due to the lighter regions which have their own agate type figuring.
