  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from an old birch burl that was purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan. The burl was very large and cut in half as shown in the images above. The burl was cut due to is very big size and this half was further cut due to its shape. The other half of the burl was used to turn a large bowl. This bowl is the largest of three turned from the left half of the burl. The wood is spalted giving it a dark red-brown color, not typical of birch. There are some interesting patterns in the bowl, most prominent is the island in the bottom. This was a punky area that is lightened by decay. It was stabilized with CA resin. There is als some curl figuring in this bowl. This chatoyance is nice and gives the bowl a radiant glow. The shape of the bowl evolved from the shape of this piece of the burl and my desire to preserve a complete live bark edge. This bowl was turned from green burl wood and dried for several months. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The wood warped as it dried, typical of bowls turned green. I like the distortion that results from warping as it gives a natural look to a bowl. The bottom of the bowl was re-turned so the bowl sits well on a flat surface. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so it can be used for displaying dry food like fruit or bread, but not for serving wet food. It would be a great center piece on a large table.

All my bowls are can be returned for a full refund if you are unsatisfied for any reason within 60 days. You must only pay the return shipping.
