  • Detailed Info about bowl

This nicely figured bowl was turned from a white oak burl that was provided by a friend. The burl came from the Taylor’s Falls, Minnesota, area and was harvested from a dead tree. An image of the burl, mounted on a Lathe is shown above. The burl had a great shape and perfect for a bowl where the top bark edge follows the full circumference of the burl (to the right in the photo of the burl below). The burl seemed solid but had a large bark inclusion (barky decayed area) in its center. I only discovered this while hollowing the bowl. An image above shows part of the inclusion during the hollowing process. The complete inclusion was quite large! This inclusion came quite close to the bottom of the bowl and you can see its rounded edge in the photo of the bottom of the bowl above. This is an interesting natural decorative feature that adds to the story of this bowl. The dark grove is about 1/16" deep and nicely textured by nature. It is solid and stable, so it will not have any affect on the functionality of the bowl. I was lucky to save the bowl since 99% of the large decayed area was removed during hollowing. The bowl has a golden color with great figuring that shows tightly twisting grain patterns and star bursts. Oak is a strong wood and this bowl shows the typical cross-linking grain lines. The bowl was turned using hand held tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl would be perfect for serving bread or fruit and for displaying various items. This bowl is beautiful and strong and would look great as a centerpiece on a table.
