  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a nicely shaped white cedar burl that came from the UP of Michigan. See the image of the burl attached to a lathe in the photos above. The top of the bowl will come from the right side of the burl in this image. The burl was nearly dry, and the wood was a bit decayed in a few areas. These softer decayed areas are difficult to turn and always show some tear out. I stabilized these areas with thin CA glue to minimize this issue. The wood took several weeks to completely dry (monitored by weight loss). There was no warping or movement of the wood during the drying. The grain figuring in this bowl is spectacular with a starburst of chatoyance. It has the appearance of a star sapphire gemstone. This curling of light phenomenon (chatoyance) is often seen in burls. It is a very desirable feature, and this bowl is a great example. The wood also has good colors and nice spalting patterns. There are overtones of green and blue in this bowl. These are from fungal action and often seen in white cedar burl. The bowl has a complete bark edge, a feature I preserve on most of my bowls. My goal is always to best show the natural beauty of the wood in a bowl, and bark with its colorful cambium layer is an important part of that beauty. This bowl also has a slightly closed form which helps to show the beautiful bark. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from slightly green wood, dried for several weeks, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, but the bowl is best used for artistic display. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. The bowl is surprisingly light in weight.

All my bowls are can be returned for a full refund if you are unsatisfied for any reason within 60 days. You must only pay the return shipping.

  • Laminated Info Card

All of my bowls come with a laminated card with images of the bowl and burl, a complete description of the bowl and making process, and the artist's bio on the back side. There is no price on the card so it can be used if the bowl is given as a gift.
