  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a cherry burl that I purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan, near the south shore of Lake Superior. A view of the entire burl is shown above. The burl was cut as shown in the photo and the piece to the right was used for this end-grain turned bowl. The live edge of the bowl follows the outer contours of the burl, giving a very irregular appearance. The pith or center of the log is near the center of the bowl since the burl wrapped most of the way around the log. The grain figuring is best described as mottled agate and bird’s eye, and the colors are red-brown with some lighter areas with unusual green and blue overtones. There were some dark soft areas just under the bark. These were stabilized and sealed with cyanoacrylate resin. The bowl was turned end-grain using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve and display food. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. Cherry darkens as it ages, giving a rich patina.
