  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a wild cherry burl that was purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan. The burl was cut in half as shown in the photos below to give two halves. The half to the left was used for this turning. The wood shows extensive bird’s eye figuring within a mottled reddish background. The wood was turned end-grain or along the axis of the tree. The center of the tree can be seen in the bottom of the bowl with its circular growth rings. The dark live edge adds a contrasting border that nicely frames the bowl. The bark fell off of this burl when it was cut due to decay. The remaining under-bark area has many small spikes that add an interesting appearance and feel. The bowl has several darker areas and lines due to spalting that provide nice rustic character. These were sealed and are completely stable. Such checks are common in end-grain turned bowls. The bowl was turned from almost dry wood and left to stabilize for several months. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but this bowl is best suited for artistic display. Cherry wood will darken with age, giving it a rich patina. This is a very nice cherry burl bowl. It is unusual to see so much bird's eye figuring. This bowl will age gracefully and improve as it develops a rich patina.
