Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a large wild cherry burl that came from the UP of Michigan, not far from Lake Superior. The burl, which wrapped completely around the log, was cut in half as shown in a photo above to give two pieces. The piece to the left was used for this bowl and is shown on the lathe in another photo. The wood shows extensive bird’s eye figuring within a mottled reddish background. There are small radial lines of curl near the jagged bark edge. The dark areas are bark inclusions. These have been stabilized with cyanoacrylate resin and are stable. The wood was turned end-grain or along the axis of the log. The center or pith can be seen in the bottom of the bowl with its growth rings. The dark reddish-brown bark edge adds a contrasting border that nicely frames the bowl. The jagged bark edge shows the actual shape of the burl. The bowl was turned from green wood and left to dry and stabilize for several months. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe so this wide bowl could be used to store food such as fruit or bread. Cherry wood will darken with age, giving it a rich patina.
Note: This bowl has a mate also listed for sale. It is similar in size but shaped differently. These two bowls would give an impressive display if positioned appropriately. There is a discount if sold as a set. The price both would be $800 plus shipping.
