  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a birch burl that was purchased from a logger in the UP of Michigan, very near the south shore of Lake Superior. The burl was small and was positioned on the side of a larger birch log. An image of the burl and part of its log is shown above. I decided to turn a bowl that shows the log and burl together. Thus, the bottom base of the bowl is positioned on the top of the burl (to the left in the image). The bowl (shown above in the images) has a complete bark edge and shows all the beauty of the burl figuring in the round bowl part, and two elongated wings from the birch log. The bark edge is also full of green lichen. The burl had an old branch knot that can be seen in the top of the image of the burl. This resulted in an interesting hole in one side of the bowl. The burl part of the bowl shows beautiful cloud type figuring with some chatoyance. The grain figuring is also very nice in the log area, especially in the left wing in the top view of the bowl. This area shows some curl figuring and chatoyance. The darker cambium layer of the bark edge provides nice contrast to the lighter wood. The bowl was turned using hand-held tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. All bowls that are turned green will warp as they dry. I love the look this natural process gives to a bowl. You can see this in the wings of the bowl. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although this bowl is best suited for artistic display.
