  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a piece of an old birch tree that grew in my yard in Hovland, MN. The wood is unusually dark and figured for birch. This is due to the old nature of the wood which was starting to spalt. The sides of the bowl show some of the lighter sap wood with contrasting darker patterns and some black lines and marks from spalting. This gives a beautiful effect. This bowl is solid and strong and will work well for holding and displaying small objects. It could also be used for food or as an art piece. The bowl nicely captures the beauty of north shore birch. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 360 grit. Bowls that are turned green usually warp during the drying process. I always re-turn the bottom of a bowl, so it sits squarely. The warping in this bowl is visible but not extreme, giving it an attractive appearance! The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil, hand buffed after each coat. This finish is considered food safe so the bowl can be used for serving food. It can be washed in soapy water and dried. Tung oil seals the wood from the inside so the bowl will last a lifetime. You can spruce up this bowl by buffing it with a soft cloth damped with walnut oil, but this is seldom needed. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
