Black Walnut Crotch Bowl (21WS17) SOLD

This bowl was turned from a black walnut crotch that came from the Minneapolis area. Black walnut wood is always beautiful, but this piece with its contrasting white sapwood and dark heartwood is stunning. Images of the crotch before and after trimming are shown above. The trimmed piece is positioned on the lathe so the top of the bowl will have a complete bark edge. There are four branch centers (knots) in this bowl. The grain figuring at the intersections of the dark bullseye patterns is wild with chatoyant rays, twisting lines, and purple overtones. The lighter areas are speckled with dark spots and streaks creating a salt and pepper look. The bark edge on this bowl provides a natural framework, and contrasts nicely with the light sapwood. The jagged bark is dark with an orange stripped pattern typical of black walnut bark. This bowl was turned from green wood and left to stabilize and dry for several months. The bowl also warped while drying which gives an interesting natural shape. This is especially evident in parts of the bark edge. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. Although this finish is considered food-safe, it is best used for artistic display. This bowl is unusual and the best black walnut crotch bowl I have made.
