  • Detailed Info about bowl

This live edged bowl was turned from a European buckthorn log that was harvested near Minneapolis. Buckthorn in an invasive small tree that is hated by most since it takes over and is difficult to permanently remove. It is a beautiful wood to turn but difficult to find with a large diameter. This bowl came from a 9” diameter fresh cut log. A common property of buckthorn is for the wood to split around the pith centers and along grain lines. This wood had many such splits in the fresh cut log. I decided to turn in any way since I get very few buckthorn logs. Other than these minor splits, the wood was stable and solid. I filled and sealed the splits with dark wood dust and CA resin, so they are stable and solid. The colors in this bowl are vibrant orange to red and stunning. The grain is beautiful with crossing curving lines and iridescent in places. I kept the bullseye pith areas in the bowl, so the radial splits give an interesting spider web effect. There is also a patch of the bark on one side of the bowl. The complete live bark edge adds a contrasting border that nicely frames the bowl. The bowl was turned from green wood and dried for several months under controlled conditions to prevent cracking. The bowl was sanded to 400 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but this bowl is best suited for artistic display or for holding small objects. This is an unusual bowl that shows the stark beauty of buckthorn wood in its natural state.
