  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned end grain from a slab cut from a downed sugar maple tree. See photo that shows the slab on the lathe. The tree was old and starting to decay.  It grew on a ridge a few miles from Lake Superior in Hovland Minnesota. I selected this piece because I could see an interesting ghostly pattern in the end of the log. The center of the tree is in the bottom of the bowl, and the ghostly pattern emerges from this center. The wood was starting to spalt and decay. These dark areas had to be stabilized with CA resin several times during turning. The bowl has a complete bark edge, so it nicely shows the complete beauty of the wood. I like the unsymmetrical nature of the piece. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sanded along the dark areas before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.). This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The tree was old with soft areas. I managed to turn it at its peak for spalting, but turning old wood like this is a tedious delicate process.
