Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a small birch burl that came from Hovland Minnesota. A photo of the burl attached to a lathe is shown below. The burl was old and dry, but the wood was solid and carved cleanly. The area just below the bark was very dry and required a lot of sanding and application of cyanoacrylate resin to give a smooth result. This area shows spalting patterns that are beautiful. The burl wood shows a lot of chatoyance (flame figuring) and nice swirling patterns. The bowl has a good feel and just looks right! The bowl was turned from dry wood, sanded to 400 grit, and sealed with two coats of pure tung oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but this bowl is best used and an artistic piece. Birch burl from the north shore is special and in high demand by artists. This bowl contains the charm and wildness of the north shore of Lake Superior. Holding this bowl gives one a feeling of the north woods!
