  • Detailed Info about bowl

This unusual bowl was turned from a large white cedar burl that came from the UP of Michigan. The burl had amazing thick bark with unusual rolling contours (see images of the burl above). The burl was trimmed as shown in the images. The blue line indicates where cuts were made. The burl was nearly dry and a bit punky in areas. These softer decayed areas were difficult to turn smoothly and showed some tear out. I stabilized these areas with thin CA glue to minimize this issue and they sanded smooth. The wood was mostly dry and took only several weeks to completely dry (monitored by weight loss). There was no significant warping or movement of the wood during drying. The grain figuring in this bowl is spectacular with a lot of chatoyance (dancing curls of light) and beautiful colors and patterns from spalting. The overall effect is breath taking. The green and blue colors in this bowl come from fungal action. The bowl has a complete bark edge, a feature I preserve on most of my bowls. My goal is always to best show the natural beauty of the wood in a bowl, and bark with its colorful cambium layer is an important part of that beauty. The wavy nature of the bark edge is due to the rolling contours on the burl (see burl image). There are several bark inclusions and dark lines from decay. These were sealed and treated with CA resin and are completely stable. These features add some extra character to this amazing bowl. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from slightly green wood, dried for several weeks, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, but the bowl is best used for artistic display. This is a very unusual bowl and has everything one could want in a large burl bowl. It is a gem, a real collector’s piece! This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
