  • Detailed Info about bowl

This large burl came from the UP of Michigan, not far from Lake Superior. The burl has amazingly thick and knobby bark. I cut a 6” thick slice from the top of the burl and secured it to my lathe. See the images above. The trimmed piece is positioned on the lathe so the top of the bowl will have a complete bark edge. The top view of the completed bowl shows the bark edge, as well as the beautiful colors and grain figuring of the wood. The wood was spalted with interesting swirling pattern, some green-blue fungal staining, and good flame figuring (chatoyance). There are also some bark inclusions which were sealed and stabilized with CA resin. The overall effect is stunning, especially when viewed with the human eye (chatoyance is difficult to show well in a photograph). The bark was decayed so I had to work hard to stabilize it and keep it secured to the bowl. It is now stable and strongly secured to the bowl and it adds a lot of raw beauty. The bark edge also provides a natural framework to the bowl, and contrasts nicely with the lighter wood of the burl. This bowl was turned from green wood and left to stabilize and dry for several months. The bowl also warped while drying which gives an interesting natural shape. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is food safe so this bowl can be used to display bread or fruit. It is not recommended to be used to serve food like salads since the bark is somewhat fragile. This is a large bowl that would look great on a large dark table. Cedar burls of this size are rare, especially one with such amazing bark. Note: there is a blog post with details of turning this bowl. Just go to my blog page and scroll down to find it.
