  • Detailed Info about bowl

This large burl came from the UP of Michigan, not far from Lake Superior. The burl has unusually thick and knobby bark. A 6” thick slab was cut from the lower part of the burl and secured it to a lathe. See the images above. The trimmed slab is positioned on the lathe so the top of the bowl will have a bark edge. Note in this image that the burl only covers a part of the slab so the bowl will have both burly and normal wood grain. The top view of the completed bowl shows the two  burl regions (on opposite sides), as well as the normal grain of the log in the middle region. You can clearly see the intersection of the burl and the log as the dark (partly decayed) areas. The burl shows nice figuring with blue-green spalting, banded colors, and radial chatoyance (flame figuring). The dark area was sealed and stabilized with cyanoacrylate resin. It is interesting that the blue-green fungal staining occurs on both sides of the dark intersection. The effect of the chatoyance in the burly areas is stunning, especially when viewed with the human eye (chatoyance is difficult to show well in a photograph). The bark was decayed so I had to work hard to stabilize it and keep it secured to the bowl. The two non-burl ends of the bowl do not have bark since these are the cut ends of the log. This bowl was turned from semi-dry wood so it was sanded soon after turning. The bowl was sanded to 400 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is food safe so this bowl can be used to display bread or fruit. It is not recommended to be used to serve food like salads since the bark is somewhat fragile. This bowl nicely shows how a burl grows from a tree and how the burl figuring differs from that in the tree. This piece is a text book example of a burl emerging from the tree. This is a very special bowl for the person who really appreciates wood figuring in its full glory.
