  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from a large wild cherry burl that came from the Twin Cities area. The burl, which wrapped completely around the log, was cut in half as shown in the photos above to give two halves. The half used for this bowl is the one to the left. The wood shows extensive bird’s eye figuring within a mottled reddish background. The bowl also shows some lighter zones with interesting shapes and structures. There is some unusual cloud type figuring on the sides near the bottom of the bowl. This intersection of the burl and the normal wood grain often shows the most interesting figuring. The wood was turned end-grain or along the axis of the log. The center or pith can be seen in the bottom of the bowl with its growth rings. The burl/log had minor decay running through its center. These small checks were filled and sealed with dark wood dust and CA glue. This darker area is stable and solid. The dark reddish-brown bark edge adds a contrasting border that nicely frames the bowl. The bowl was turned from green wood and left to dry and stabilize for several months. The bowl was sanded to 600 grit and sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe so this wide bowl could be used to store food such as fruit or bread. Cherry wood will darken with age, giving it a rich patina.
