Detailed Info about bowl
This spectacular bowl was turned from a North Shore mountain ash burl that came from Hovland, Minnesota. Mountain ash burls are very rare, and this is the only one I have turned. Sorbus aucuparia, commonly called rowan and mountain-ash, is a species of deciduous tree or shrub in the rose family. It is common along the North Shore of Lake Superior and is full of orange-red berries in the Fall. The berries provide winter food for birds and animals. This is the only burl mountain ash I have seen. This burl has beautiful flame figuring giving it a pearly appearance. This glow is difficult to photograph! The flaming effect (chatoyance) is similar to mother of pearl. The grain figuring is full of mottled patterns like in some marble. The photo of the bottom view (below) shows this better. This wood is beautiful and unusual. A jagged bark edge frames this unusual bowl. The bowl was turned from green wood using handheld tools on a lathe, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. Bowls turned from green wood always warp a little during drying. This gives distortions that add natural charm to a bowl. I re-turn the bottom of green turned bowls to make sure they sit squarely. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat and buffed to give it a deep satin luster. This finish is considered food safe, although the bowl is best suited for artistic display. This bowl is a gem and has an amazingly smooth texture.
