  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl is from a black walnut log that came from the Minneapolis, MN, area. The log was old and starting to spalt. Spalting is a process where bacteria and fungus have started the decay process. This causes color changes in the wood which can be beautiful if caught before the wood becomes soft and punky. In this bowl the lighter sapwood has started to turn darker in patches causing a salt and pepper appearance. The wood is solid and smooth. The heart wood has the usual black walnut colors including black, brown, and orange. The wood also has interesting figuring including some curl, especially near the two small knots.  The bark is jagged and has an interesting wavy pattern of black and orange-red lines. The shape of the bowl is elegant, and its overall appearance will certainly attract attention. The grain of the wood shows nice growth lines with some glow. The shape of the bowl has the appearance of being oval. This is an optical illusion due to the height differences in the bowl. This shape is typical of a classic live edged bowl. The bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from aged green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 400 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but the bark edge is somewhat fragile, so it is not recommended to use it for serving food. The spalting gives this bowl an unusual appearance. You can spruce up this bowl (if necessary) by buffing it with a soft cloth dampened with walnut oil, but simple dusting is all that is necessary. This bowl should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
