  • Detailed Info about bowl

This flaming bowl was turned from a large birch burl that was purchased from a logger near the south shore of Lake Superior in the UP of Michigan. The burl was about 2 ft wide and 3 ft high (too large for my lathe) so it had to be cut into two pieces. The photos above show the complete burl in the back of my pickup, the two pieces cut from it, and the larger piece, trimmed and mounted on the lathe. In this photo, the top of the bowl will be to the right toward the headstock (power end) of the lathe. This keeps a natural bark edge on the bowl. The wood is highly spalted with some dark colors of interesting patterns, but the brilliant flame figuring (chatoyance) makes this bowl unusual. The bowl has the appearance of being on fire, but this effect is very difficult to capture in photos. The amazing bark edge is very irregular and follows the outer contours of the burl. The dark colors and patterns just below the bark give a great contrast to the lighter flaming wood. The top of the bark edge looks like bubbling lava. There is also a lot of green lichen on the bark giving a very natural north woods look. The lichen is preserved and hardened. The over all appearance of this bowl is quite spectacular. The bowl was turned using hand held tools on a lathe from green wood, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. The bowl was sealed with two coats of tung oil, hand sanded after each coat, and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food safe, although this bowl is best suited for artistic display. This bowl is really special and would look great as a centerpiece on a table in a north woods cabin. This bowl would also be a great collector’s piece for a display or gallery.
