Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a branched log cut from an old sugar maple tree. The tree was cut down due decay. A cross-section slab was cut from the left end of the crotched piece shown in the image. The goal was to turn an end-grain bowl that contains interesting patterns. The bowl was turned end-grain, so the center or pith of the log (crotch) is near its center. A beautiful figure emerged as the piece was turned. The circular grain lines of the tree also surround the dark motif! The dark figure is interesting and fun to imagine what creature it describes. The bowl has a nice shape, beautiful bark edge, and is pleasing to hold. The dark pattern is from spalting/decay. Parts of the dark area had to be stabilized CA resin to give a smooth finish. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sanded along the gain lines before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.). This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve or display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This bowl is an interesting conversation piece.
