Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a branched log cut from an old sugar maple tree in Hovland, MN. The tree was cut down due to decay. The log had three branches forming triple crotch shown in a photo. The bowl was turned so that the centers of the three branches intersect together to give a triple crotch bowl. The wood was old so there were a lot of dark spalted areas. These lines or regions generally follow the areas where the branches intersected. The twisted, dueling swordlike pattern is beautiful. The bowl also shows the circular grain lines for each branch, golden colors, and a natural bark edge. The dark patterns from spalting/decay and were sealed with CA resin and are completely stable. Sometimes the beauty of wood is best just before decay, but a bit tricky to time and to turn! This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sand along the gain lines before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.). This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve or display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This bowl is unusual!!!
