Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a branched log cut from an old sugar maple tree. The tree was cut down due decay. A cross-section slab was cut from the tree with the goal of turning an end-grain bowl that contains interesting patterns. The slab piece was attached to a lathe as shown in an image. The bowl was turned end-grain, so the center or pith of the log (branch) is near the center. A beautiful flying bird like pattern emanates from the center. The circular grain lines of the tree also surround the pattern! This bowl came out better than expected. It has a nice shape, beautiful bark edge, and a pleasing shape that is nice to hold. The dark patterns are from spalting/decay. It was on the edge of successfully being turned. It took a lot of stabilizing with CA resin. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from green wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sand along the gain lines before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.). This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve or display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age. This bowl is unusual!!!
