  • Detailed Info about bowl

This bowl was turned from an old maple burl provided by a friend. The burl came from northern Wisconsin. The trimmed and partly turned burl is shown attached to a lathe. The burl was gnarly and dry. It has been sitting in my garage for several years. I was surprised how solid and colorful the wood was. The color is red brown with very busy and beautiful figuring. The mottled patterns appear to be at different depths with some lighter rays of chatoyance on top. The chatoyance is not bright and flaming due the old age of the burl, but it adds a beautiful touch. The overall pattern is rich and calming. The edge of the bowl shows the actual natural outer part of the burl. The base of the bowl shows some decay where the burl emerged from the tree. This adds an interesting solidness to the base of the burl. The burl as a beautiful rolling outer shape adds to its beauty. This bowl was turned using handheld tools on a lathe from dry wood and sanded to 400 grit. I also carefully hand sand along the gain lines before and after finishing. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil (Real Milk Paint Co.) and finished with a beeswax/walnut oil mixture followed by drying and buffing. This finish is considered food safe so this bowl can be used to serve or display food, although it is best used as an artistic piece. The bowl is stable and should last for hundreds of years and improve gracefully with age.
