Detailed Info about bowl
This bowl was turned from a wild cherry burl that came from the Twin Cities area. The burl, which was on one side of a log, was cut in half, perpendicular to the axis of the log. The cross section of one of the pieces is shown in the images. This piece was turned end-grain, so the pith of the log is near the center of the bottom of the bowl. The bowl is interesting since one half of it contains the burl and the other half is the log. This is a great example of a burl emerging or growing from a tree. You can clearly see the intersection of burl with its bird's eye figuring and the circular growth rings of the log. The burl has a jagged outer shape and shows signs of decay with some minor checks. These areas were sealed and stabilized during the turning with cyanoacrylate resin. The burl shows bird’s eye figuring within a mottled reddish background, typical of cherry burl. The log part shows the usual growth rings, and a count shows the log was about 50 years old. The burl started forming when the tree was about 25 years old according to a count of the growth rings toward the burl. This is an unusual bowl that tells a story of a burl emerging on one side of a cherry tree. One can only wonder what caused the burl to start. The bowl was turned from wet wood and set aside to dry and stabilize for several months (under controlled conditions). The bowl was sanded to 400 grit and sealed with two coats of pure tung oil, hand sanded after each coat and finished with a buffed thin coat of beeswax and walnut oil. This finish is considered food-safe, but this bowl is best used and an artistic piece. Cherrywood will darken with age, giving it a rich patina.
