  • Detailed Info about bowl

This large, winged bowl was turned from a white cedar burl that came from Hovland, Minnesota. Images of the burl, attached to a lathe, are shown. The burl had a living ant next on its flat side. The ants were dispatched, and the hole covered with a board, to provide a stable platform to attach the faceplate. Cedar is a soft wood, so the turning went quickly, but frequent sharpening of the HSS steel gouges was required to minimize tear out. I always try to maximize the size of the natural edged bowl to be turned. This can be tricky where the burl transitions into the log. The wings of this bowl result from the parts of the burl where it transitions into its log. I tried to cut this as close as possible to keep the natural edge and maximize bowl size. The bowl has amazing grain figuring and colors. It also has rays of chatoyance dancing all over its surface. The overall effect is stunning. Take a careful look at the swirling patterns, colors, and flame in this bowl. The overall effect is unusual. A complete natural bark edge completes this beautiful bowl. The shape of the bowl was chosen to best show the grain figuring and to display the interesting unsymmetrical bark edge that surrounds the bowl. Keeping the wings on the bowl was challenging, but this feature adds a lot to its beauty. The bowl was turned from green wood using handheld tools on a lathe, dried for several months, and sanded to 600 grit. Bowls turned from green wood always warp during drying. This gives small distortions that add natural charm to a bowl. I re-turn the bottom of green turned bowls to remove any warping to make sure they sit nicely. The bowl was sealed with two coats of pure tung oil, hand sanded after each coat. This finish is considered food safe, although the bowl is best suited for artistic display. This bowl is very light (in weight) and the wood is quite soft. Care must be taken to avoid denting and scratching the wood. This bowl is for artistic display.
